At a Glance

Amalfi rises almost vertically from a small harbour into a maze of lanes, steps and lemon terraces. Tender passengers land beside the centre, a few minutes from the Cathedral of St Andrew, the old arsenal and the route to the Paper Museum. Atrani is a rewarding walk through the neighbouring valley; Ravello, Positano and the Valle delle Ferriere require more planning. Road congestion, crowded ferries and tender operations make a focused town day safer than stacking distant sights.

Did you know?

Amalfi has stories most visitors walk straight past.

  • 1

Amalfi's medieval Tabula de Amalpha was used as a maritime-law code across the Mediterranean.

  • 2

The cathedral's bronze doors were made in Constantinople and donated in 1060.

  • 3

Amalfi paper is traditionally made from cotton rag rather than ordinary wood-pulp cellulose.

If you have…

⏱ 2 hours

  1. 1.Tender ashore and walk directly to Piazza Duomo.
  2. 2.Visit the cathedral complex if open, then cross the old lanes to the arsenal exterior.
  3. 3.Return to the correct tender queue with at least 30 minutes in reserve.

🕐 4 hours

  1. 1.Visit the cathedral complex before queues build.
  2. 2.Walk uphill to the Paper Museum for a timed demonstration.
  3. 3.Descend through the lanes for Pansa or a reserved lunch near Piazza dei Dogi.

🌅 A full day

  1. 1.Choose either Ravello, Positano by ferry, or Valle delle Ferriere as the main extension.
  2. 2.Keep two central hours for the cathedral and Paper Museum rather than stacking multiple coast towns.
  3. 3.Reserve the return ferry or taxi and leave an earlier backup option.
  4. 4.Join the ship's tender queue well before final tender because harbour congestion can slow boarding.

The area around

Amalfi's centre comfortably fills three to five hours. Atrani is the easiest extension; Ravello offers gardens and views; Positano works best by ferry. Pompeii is possible only on a long call with ship-backed transport and is usually a poor independent choice from a tender port.

Atrani

15–25 min on foot

Piazza Umberto I · Church of San Salvatore · Compact lanes

Ravello

25–50 min by road

Villa Rufolo · Villa Cimbrone · Cathedral square

Positano

25–40 min by seasonal ferry

Spiaggia Grande · Church dome · Cliffside lanes

Valle delle Ferriere

2–5 hrs depending on route

Waterfalls · Fern habitat · Paper-mill history

Things cruise passengers get wrong

  • ⚠️A true Amalfi call tenders; Salerno is a separate port often marketed as Amalfi Coast.
  • ⚠️Ferries and buses can sell out or run late in peak season.
  • ⚠️Coast-road traffic makes multi-town independent tours high risk.

Weather through the year

April, May, late September and October are best for steps and coastal walks without peak summer heat and crowding.
