At a Glance

Capri is spectacular but rewards ruthless planning. Tenders land at Marina Grande, where the funicular climbs to Capri town and buses or open-top taxis connect Anacapri, Marina Piccola and the Blue Grotto. Classic choices include the Piazzetta and Gardens of Augustus, Villa San Michele with Monte Solaro, a circuit by boat, or the long walk to Villa Jovis. Trying to combine them all usually means queues rather than enjoyment. Choose one area, keep a weather-proof alternative and leave a large margin for the tender.

Getting Around

Normally every 15 minutes and more often at peaks. Long April–October queues are common; Tap & Go is available and each passenger needs a separate payment card.

⚠️ Keep at least 60–90 minutes for the return from an upper-island sight to the tender queue.

Top Things to Do

Must see

Piazzetta and Capri town

60–120 min · Free; transport and purchases extra

Ride from Marina Grande into Capri's pedestrian heart, then explore Piazza Umberto I, Via Camerelle and flower-filled lanes before crowds peak.

Easy after funicular; crowded and paved

Public streets always open; funicular normally operates frequently but closes for annual winter maintenance, with replacement buses.

Must see

Gardens of Augustus

45–75 min · Paid; low-cost card-only admission

Compact terraces six minutes from the Piazzetta frame the classic view over Via Krupp, Marina Piccola and the Faraglioni sea stacks.

Easy

Open year-round with seasonal hours; 1 May–15 Sep is listed as 09:00–20:00. Card payment only. Confirm Via Krupp separately because it may close.

Must see

Island boat circuit and Faraglioni

2–3 hrs · Paid

A circuit from Marina Grande passes sea caves, towering cliffs, lighthouse views and the Faraglioni, revealing the island's scale better than the congested roads.

Easy if boarding steps are manageable

Departures are seasonal and weather-dependent. Blue Grotto admission and waiting are usually separate; choose a return at least 60–90 minutes before final tender.

Must see

Current listing: May–Oct 09:30–17:00; Mar–Apr 09:30–16:00; Nov–Feb 10:30–15:30. Wind or maintenance can interrupt service. Open single chairs may not suit young or highly active children.

Blue Grotto

2–4 hrs including queues · Paid; transport and grotto rowboat admission separate

Sunlight refracting through an underwater opening creates the famous electric-blue interior, entered through a very low cave mouth in small rowing boats.

Moderate — transfer into a small rowboat and lying back

Opens only in calm conditions and status is assessed after 09:00; it can close at any moment. High-season waits can exceed one hour. Never make it the only plan.

Did you know?

Capri has stories most visitors walk straight past.

  • 1

Roman emperor Tiberius governed much of the empire from Capri during the final years of his reign.

  • 2

The Faraglioni are three separate sea stacks, one of which is pierced by a natural arch.

  • 3

Torta caprese is the island's flourless chocolate-and-almond cake.

If you have…

⏱ 2 hours

  1. 1.Confirm final tender and current funicular queue before leaving Marina Grande.
  2. 2.Ride to the Piazzetta, walk to the Gardens of Augustus and return directly.
  3. 3.If queues are severe, stay in Marina Grande for the waterfront and a short coast boat only if its return is guaranteed.

🕐 4 hours

  1. 1.Choose either Capri town plus Gardens of Augustus, or Anacapri plus Villa San Michele.
  2. 2.Use a taxi if bus and funicular queues threaten the plan.
  3. 3.Take a quick lunch with continuous service and begin returning to Marina Grande 75–90 minutes before tender cutoff.

🌅 A full day

  1. 1.Choose one headline combination: Capri town plus boat circuit; Anacapri plus Monte Solaro; or Capri town plus Villa Jovis.
  2. 2.Attempt Blue Grotto only if the live status is open and the queue estimate preserves the ship buffer.
  3. 3.Avoid combining Blue Grotto, Monte Solaro, Villa Jovis and central Capri in one cruise call.
  4. 4.Return to Marina Grande well ahead of the final tender and expect a queue.

The area around

Capri town is the easiest first visit. Anacapri offers Villa San Michele and Monte Solaro; Marina Piccola gives Faraglioni views; a boat circuit reveals the island's cliffs. Blue Grotto is memorable only when sea state and queues cooperate.

Capri town

4 min funicular plus queue

Piazzetta · Gardens of Augustus · Via Camerelle

Anacapri

20–40 min by bus or taxi

Villa San Michele · Monte Solaro chairlift · San Michele church

Marina Piccola

20–35 min by bus or taxi

Faraglioni views · Beach clubs · Sheltered bay

Blue Grotto

30–60 min plus unpredictable wait

Blue light effect · Rowboat entry · Sea-cliff setting

Things cruise passengers get wrong

  • 🚨Tender operations and the Blue Grotto can change with sea conditions; always preserve a weather-and-queue buffer.
  • 🚨Allow 60–90 minutes to travel from Capri or Anacapri back through Marina Grande and join the tender line.
  • ⚠️Villa Jovis is a long uphill commitment and should only be attempted after confirming same-day opening.

Weather through the year

April, May, late September and October offer comfortable walking and fewer extremes than midsummer, though sea conditions can affect tenders and caves in any month.
