At a Glance

Carloforte is the only town on San Pietro Island and feels unlike mainland Sardinia. Its people descend from Ligurian coral fishers who moved through Tabarka in Tunisia, leaving a living Tabarchino language and a cuisine of pesto, couscous and tuna. The harbourfront, lanes, churches and walls are easily explored on foot from the landing. Beaches, salt pans, the LIPU falcon reserve and Capo Sandalo lighthouse need a bus, taxi, bike or tour—and a firm return plan for the tender.

⚠️ The tender itself may be suspended or slowed by wind and sea conditions.

⚠️ Ferry traffic makes the harbour edge busy; use marked pedestrian crossings.

⚠️ Remote coves may have no shade, water, mobile signal or taxi rank.

⚠️ Do not rely on an infrequent final bus for the last tender.

Did you know?

Carloforte has stories most visitors walk straight past.

  • 1

Carloforte's founders were Ligurians who had lived on the Tunisian island of Tabarka before settling San Pietro in 1738.

  • 2

Tabarchino preserves a Ligurian language tradition hundreds of kilometres from Genoa.

  • 3

The Girotonno festival celebrates the island's long relationship with migrating bluefin tuna.

If you have…

⏱ 2 hours

  1. 1.Confirm the last tender before leaving the harbour.
  2. 2.Walk the waterfront, Piazza Carlo Emanuele III and the Tabarchino lanes to the upper walls.
  3. 3.Stop for focaccia, fainò, gelato or coffee and return 30–45 minutes before the stated tender cutoff.

🕐 4 hours

  1. 1.Explore the old town and visit Casa del Duca if its seasonal hours fit.
  2. 2.Have a Carlofortina lunch centred on tuna, cascà or pesto.
  3. 3.Add the Salt Route or Torre San Vittorio, keeping the final hour for the harbour and tender queue.

🌅 A full day

  1. 1.Choose one pre-arranged island circuit: southern beaches and Le Colonne, or Cala Fico and Capo Sandalo.
  2. 2.Combine the circuit with a short old-town walk and a reserved lunch if timing allows.
  3. 3.Use boat trips only when their scheduled return leaves a substantial tender buffer.
  4. 4.Do not try to see every coast; island roads, stops and weather consume more time than the map suggests.

The area around

Stay in town for Tabarchino history and food, or choose one island circuit. Southern beaches are easiest; Capo Sandalo and Cala Fico deliver the wildest scenery; the salt pans offer a close, flat nature route.

Things cruise passengers get wrong

  • 🚨Confirm the final tender and build in time for tender queues and changing sea conditions.
  • ⚠️Island taxis and buses are limited; pre-arrange distant beaches, Cala Fico and Capo Sandalo.
  • ⚠️Museum hours are seasonal and particularly restricted in summer afternoons—check the call date.

Weather through the year

May, June, September and October combine warm weather with more comfortable walking; July and August have the fullest beach services but greater heat and demand.
