Around 100 cruise calls a season. Larger ships use the Holmsgarth terminal, roughly a mile north of the centre; smaller vessels dock at Victoria Pier in the middle of town. Commercial Street is the spine of the town. Two of the three best places to eat are shut on Mondays — booking is not optional when a ship is in.

Did you know?

Lerwick has stories most visitors walk straight past.

  • 1

Lerwick is closer to Norway's capital than to Edinburgh — Shetland was Norse until 1469.

  • 2

Every January the Up Helly Aa festival sees a Viking longship torched through the streets — Europe's biggest fire festival.

  • 3

Shetland ponies are native here and have roamed the islands for over 4,000 years — some stand barely 87 cm tall.

  • 4

Fort Charlotte in the town centre was built in the 1600s and named after Queen Catherine, wife of Charles II.
