At a Glance

Palma is one of the Mediterranean's strongest city port days: La Seu Cathedral, the Almudaina, La Llotja, old-town patios, markets and Es Baluard cluster around the historic centre. The complication is the enormous harbour. Cruise ships may use Ponent or Paraires maritime stations, or the more distant Western Breakwater, generally 3–6 km from the cathedral. Once in town, Palma is very walkable; Bellver Castle, the Miró foundation, beaches and the rest of Mallorca need transport.

⚠️ The harbour is several kilometres long; guidance that says the port is 600 m from the old town refers to its inner edge, not every cruise berth.

⚠️ Do not calculate the day without the exact maritime-station number.

⚠️ Old-town lanes include cobbles, steps and restricted vehicle access.

⚠️ Island-road traffic can delay Valldemossa, Sóller and beach returns.

Did you know?

Palma de Mallorca has stories most visitors walk straight past.

  • 1

La Seu's great rose window is about eleven metres across and contains more than a thousand pieces of coloured glass.

  • 2

Bellver is one of Europe's oldest surviving circular castles.

  • 3

Palma's old town contains dozens of traditional mansion courtyards hidden behind restrained street façades.

If you have…

⏱ 2 hours

  1. 1.Use the fastest announced transport from the exact maritime station to Parc de la Mar.
  2. 2.See La Seu exterior, the Almudaina, old-town lanes and La Llotja.
  3. 3.Return with at least 45 minutes for terminal transport and security.

🕐 4 hours

  1. 1.Pre-book La Seu and visit it first unless the call is Sunday.
  2. 2.Walk the Almudaina exterior, Jewish-quarter lanes, Plaça de Cort and La Llotja.
  3. 3.Choose market tapas, ensaïmada or Es Baluard before returning by shuttle, bus or taxi.

🌅 A full day

  1. 1.Build a Palma day around La Seu, the old town and one extension: Bellver, Miró, Es Baluard or the beach.
  2. 2.For Valldemossa or Sóller, leave early with protected transport and reduce the city programme.
  3. 3.Do not combine Sóller, Valldemossa, Bellver and a full old-town visit in one port call.
  4. 4.Try ensaïmada, sobrasada, tumbet, frit mallorquí, pa amb oli, almond gató and Mallorcan wine.

The area around

Palma itself easily fills a full day. Bellver and the Miró Foundation are the most logical city extensions. Valldemossa is the classic half-day beyond Palma; Sóller and Deià work best on a longer protected excursion. A beach can be added without crossing the island.

Bellver and Cala Major

15–30 min by road

Circular Gothic castle · Palma bay panorama · Fundació Miró Mallorca

Valldemossa

35–55 min by road

Charterhouse · Stone lanes · Mountain setting

Sóller and Port de Sóller

Ciutat Jardí and Palma coast

20–35 min by road

Fine sand · Accessible bathing support · Seafront restaurants

Things cruise passengers get wrong

  • 🚨Western Breakwater can be roughly 6 km from La Seu; never assume the whole port is a short walk.
  • ⚠️Cruise-line shuttle pricing, drop-off and last run vary by operator and call.
  • ⚠️La Seu normally has no Sunday tourist visits and major sites may close Mondays.

Weather through the year

April to June and September to October are ideal for city walking; midsummer is hot, crowded and busy on island roads.
