Piazza Bovio and Old Port View
30–60 min · Free
A long stone terrace projecting into the sea, with exceptional views toward Elba and the Tuscan Archipelago and a tiny lighthouse at its tip.
Piombino is more than a gateway label for Siena and Pisa. Its old centre occupies a panoramic promontory above the Tuscan Archipelago, with Piazza Bovio, medieval defences and an excellent Populonia museum. Fifteen kilometres north, Baratti and Populonia combine Etruscan necropolises, a Roman acropolis, a hill village and a beautiful gulf. Pisa and Siena are each roughly 110 km away and suit a long pre-arranged excursion rather than a casual independent train day.
Port to Piombino old town
Call-specific; confirm drop-off, last run and accessibility aboard.
Port, Piombino station and town
Services vary by season; the port-area stop is Piombino Marittima. Check Autolinee Toscane or Trenitalia live times.
Baratti and Populonia
Best for linking the necropolis, acropolis and hill village without relying on sparse buses.
Baratti and Populonia Alta
Date-specific timetable essential. The free 15E Ecobarattibus ran 11 Jun–14 Sep 2026 from Caldanelle, which still requires a connection from Piombino.
Pisa
Roughly 110 km. Independent rail generally requires reaching Campiglia Marittima and is not the simplest cruise-day option.
⚠️ Do not walk through unmarked industrial or ferry lanes.
⚠️ Seasonal buses to Baratti and Populonia can be infrequent and may require changes.
⚠️ Pisa and Siena each consume most of the port day and need a large traffic buffer.
⚠️ An Elba ferry day is vulnerable to queues, schedule changes and missed connections; leave at least one sailing in reserve.

Reserve tower access only on the official Opera della Primaziale Pisana site and allow for security and the long port return.
8–10 hrs from ship · City walking free; cathedral complex and museums paid
Piazza del Campo and the striped marble cathedral reward a full-day road excursion. Coaches stop outside the pedestrian centre, adding walking time at both ends.
High — long transfer, hills and walking zone

Piombino has stories most visitors walk straight past.
Populonia was the only major Etruscan city built directly on the sea.
Piombino was capital of a small principality that survived for centuries before Napoleon's sister Elisa Bonaparte ruled it.
The local coastline faces Elba and several islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.
Piombino old town fills an easy half day. Baratti and Populonia are the signature extension and can fill the whole call for archaeology lovers. Suvereto offers a compact wine-country alternative. Pisa and Siena are possible but distant; choose one, not both, unless the cruise line sells a tightly managed combination.
San Cerbone necropolis · Populonia acropolis · Baratti beach and medieval borgo
Stone lanes · Val di Cornia wine · Rocca Aldobrandesca
Leaning Tower · Cathedral and Baptistery · Piazza dei Miracoli
Piazza del Campo · Siena Cathedral · Contrade streets
April to June and September to October suit archaeology and promontory walks; midsummer brings heat and heavy Elba ferry traffic.
